PLACEMENT AND EXPECTATIONS FOR WL HONORS CLASSES
Honor WL courses: Honors education is an expansion of academic learning experiences within a program of study at the student’s grade level. Therefore, the Honors World Language courses at Etowah are developed by the WL teachers to help meet the needs of accelerated students. Honors classes offer the same curriculum that non-honors classes offer but are more challenging. Honors courses are faster paced and cover topics more in-depth. However, these classes are not usually considered to be equivalent to college-level work, which is why they will not earn you college credit.
Advanced Placement Spanish (AP Spanish): It is a course guided by the College
Board Placement curriculum. It is designed for advanced learners of the Spanish Language interested in advancing in their language learning experience and getting college credit by taking the AP Examination.Besides a more in-depth study and practice of the language and culture, Honor WL courses strive in preparing students for Advanced Placement Examination in their senior year which gives students the opportunity to receive college credit by earning qualifying scores on the examination.
Grammar, reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills are covered at an accelerated pace and students at this level will be expected to perform with minimal guided practice and fostering independent learning. Instruction and assessment will be differentiated in accordance with the standards from the College Board Pre-Advanced Placement Program (levels III, IV and 5), Georgia Performance Standards, and the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) and AATSP (American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese) affiliations. Emphasis is placed on conversation, vocabulary and correct usage of the language, correct pronunciation and oral and
written proficiency in an integrative approach. Honors curriculum may include, but is not limited to the following enrichment activities: Research and presentation on various topics, appreciation and development of cultural awareness through comprehension and critical analysis of various readings, media resources and authentic materials, writing expository, narrative, persuasive, and imaginative 250 word compositions via letter, emails, and/or journals in blogs, wikis or other formats, understand standard Spanish on radio or television programs, such as soap operas, among others. In short, it is expected that a language learner enrolled in an Honor course should be able to perform at mid to high level and turn the skills and knowledge acquired in the classroom into a functional experience that can be used to excel when communicating in the target language.
